Grants that focus on Information Literacy Competency
LSTA
Grant
The
Rochester Regional Library Council received an LSTA grant “to
raise awareness of the importance of Information Literacy in the
community. One product of this grant is a series of PowerPoint
presentations that can be used to illustrate a discussion of
information literacy concepts. Project Director Jennifer
Quigley has compiled an excellent resource for both K-12 and
academic librarians.
LSTA funding, assisted by the State of Massachusetts
Board of Library Commissioners funded the University of Massachusetts
Amherst Library's instructional website: Teaching Information Literacy
on the Web.
The
Pacific Bell Grant
The
Pacific Bell / UCLA Initiative for 21st Century Literacies is
a two year project funded by a $1 million gift from Pacific Bell
to UCLA’sGraduate School of Education & Information Studies
(GSE&IS). This project will evaluate the meaning of information
literacy by focusing on educating the end user of information,
improving the information system, addressing policy issues.
Mellon
Foundation
AT&T
The
Five College of Ohio have had success in funding their programs.
These grants allowed the Five Colleges to develop an information
literacy tutorial and strengthen their faculty/librarian collaborations.
William
and Flora Hewlett Foundation
Supported a grant at Brandeis
University entitled Strengthening Interdisciplinary Connections in the Brandeis General Education
Program. This large grant allowed librarians, faculty, computing
professionals, and consultants, to develop components in the General
Education Program that focused on improving student competency
in critically evaluating information sources.
Hewlett also gave funding for
Reinventing the Core Curriculum, a project at Montana State University
Bozeman to restructure general education to
include information literacy.
The
Institute for Museum and Library Services
University of South Florida (Tampa Campus Library)
- Tampa, FL 2000 National Leadership Grants for Libraries - Education & Training.
This two-year project will employ 12 Graduate Assistants enrolled
in the School of Library and Information Science to develop and teach
information literacy to 300 freshman enrolled in USF’s Learning
Communities Program.
Inter-American University of Puerto Rico - Mercedita,
PR 2001 National Leadership Grants for Libraries - Library-Museum
Collaboration. This two-year collaborative project between Ponce
Historical Archives (PHA), the Ponce Museum of History (PMH) and
the Inter American University of Puerto Rico will integrate their
historical resources by digitizing materials, providing Internet
access and training for teachers and other personnel. The training
will use information technology and the integration of primary sources
into the history curriculum as a strategy for developing information
literacy in students.
University of Rhode Island - Kingston, RI 2000 National
Leadership Grants for Libraries - Education & Training. This
two-year project will recruit six Fellows from diverse backgrounds,
support them in a program of study to complete the master’s
degree at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library
and Information Studies, and involve them in developing programs
to prepare librarians to work with diverse populations and to provide
culturally sensitive information literacy instruction.
Association of College and Research Libraries - Chicago,
IL 2000 National Leadership Grants for Libraries - Education & Training.
This two year project will train academic librarians to work with
faculty to design, implement, and evaluate tools for assessing student
learning outcomes resulting from information literacy courses.
Ameritech
A Partnership Award grant came to Xavier
University to develop an interactive
tutorial using the Standards for Information Literacy Competency
for Higher Education to use primarily with Nursing students.
