Selection Criteria for Applicants to Be a Liaison

(Board document from Annual Conference 2005 meeting)

The following criteria is to be used for selecting individuals to serve as a liaison on behalf of ACRL at organizations identified by the Council of Liaisons and approved by the Board. (Note: individuals need not meet all of these criteria, but preference will be given to those who do.)

  1. Content knowledge in area of focus of organization for which individual is being considered for a liaison role.

  2. Current member of organization and number of years a member of the association.

  3. Level of activity with the organization, using such quantifiable measurements as committee appointments, attendance at conferences, papers presented, articles published, and leadership positions held (i.e., has the individual actively participated in and influenced the work of the association).

  4. Ability to identify the needs of the liaison organization and articulate a way in which librarians, libraries, and/or ACRL can assist the organization, keeping in mind and linking to, ACRL’s vision and strategic objectives.

  5. Proven record of delivering outcomes for ACRL.

  6. Member of ACRL.

  7. Level of activity within ACRL, using such quantifiable measurements as committee appointments, attendance at conferences, papers presented, articles published, and leadership positions held."

  8. Hold an advanced degree of specialization in the organization’s area of focus.

  9. Diversity should be a factor in considering liaison appointments.

  10. Personal effectiveness including that the individual:

a. Should be articulate and persuasive.

b. Should possess demonstrated abilities in leadership and in dealing with people tactfully.

Selection Criteria for Target Organizations

The following set of criteria is used by the council for recommending organizations for liaison relationships to be approved by the board. (Note: organizations need not meet all of these criteria, but preference will be given to those who do.)

  1. Does the target organization reflect a direction of ACRL as articulated in ACRL’s Strategic Plan?

  2. Does the target organization reflect a direction of ACRL as articulated in the ACRL Section, Committee, Unit, etc. Strategic Plan, Operating Plans, Goals and/or Outcomes?

  3. Does this relationship reflect current issues within the library and information profession and/or in related professions? Does this relationship advance the academic library within the environment and/or institution?

  4. Does this relationship reflect future issues within the library and information profession and/or related professions? Does this relationship advance the future of the academic library within the environment and/or institution?

  5. Do the specific goals and outcomes of the liaison relationship offer significant accomplishments for the ACRL vision? Are the projected accomplishments realistic? Can projected activities be achieved in a timely fashion?
