ACRL e-Learning

Leading the Academic Library

Live Webcast
Check back for dates.

Webcast Description:
Change is a word so frequently used that it may not have the impact it once did. It is the kind and pace of change, though, that makes leadership in academic librarianship more important than it ever has been. Understanding, vision, political acumen, the ability to employ strategy and tactics are all vital for leaders today. This session will introduce some basic ideas of leadership as offered by some influential individuals, emphasize the nature of the academic library as an organization, and investigate both the language and ethics of leadership. The aforementioned will ultimately serve to set the stage for the practice of leadership in academic libraries.

Registrants will have access to the online community one week prior to the Webcast to participate in discussion boards as preparation for the Webcast.

Presenter:
John Budd
is professor and associate director of the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies at the University of Missouri-Columbia.  He is also serving as president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education.  Many of writings, including The Changing Academic Library: Operations, Culture, Environments (Chicago: ACRL, 2005), have addressed management and leadership issues.  In general he believes that leadership necessarily embodies responsibility as well as authority, that leaders should indeed endeavor to do the right thing, and that leaders will always make mistakes (a true mark of leadership is correcting the mistakes without blaming anyone else).
