Vice-president/President-elect
 Erika Linke is associate dean of university libraries at Carnegie Mellon University, a position she has held since 2005. From 1984 to 2005, she held numerous positions at Carnegie Mellon University, including associate dean of university libraries for collection and user services (2003–05), associate university librarian for collection and user services (2001–03), associate university librarian for access services (1998–2001), acting university librarian (1996–98), assistant university librarian for access services (1993–98), head of collections and access (1991–93), head of acquisitions and collection development (1985–91), and conversion specialist and reference librarian (1984–85). She also served as head of interlibrary loan and INFORM at the University of Minnesota (1982–83).
Her activities in ACRL include serving as chair of the Excellence in Academic Libraries Nominations Committee (2006–present), member of the Scholarly Communication Committee (2005–present), and cochair of the 2007 National Conference Contributed Papers Committee (2005–present). Linke also served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee (2001–03) and was on the ACRL Board of Directors (2001–03). She was chair of the Copyright Committee (1995–97) and has been a member of ALCTS, LAMA, LITA, RUSA since 1985.
Linke’s work with state and regional associations has included membership in the Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia Chapter of ACRL (WPWVC), with service as chapter president (2003–04), as a member of the Board of Directors (2001–04), and as a member of the WPWVC Revitalization Committee (2000–01). She also served on the Oakland Library Consortium’s Board of Directors (1996–98).
Linke currently serves on the PALINET Board of Trustees (2005–present). She has been a member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Program for Deliberative Democracy Advisory Board since 2006, and she has been a Pittsburgh Bibliophiles Advisory Board member since 2001. Linke has been involved with the North American Serials Interest Group (1986–present) and affiliated with the Association for Asian Studies since 1980.
Linke was a UCLA Senior Fellow in 2003.

Linke received her master’s of library science from the University of Minnesota and her bachelor of arts degree in German and Chinese from Miami University (Ohio).
 Scott Walter is associate university librarian for services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a position he has held since 2006. From 2004 to 2006, he was assistant dean of libraries for information and instructional services at the University of Kansas. Walter also worked at Washington State University, where he served as interim assistant director of libraries for public services and outreach (2002–04), and as head of the George B. Brain Education Library (2001–02). Prior to that, he was information services librarian and collection manager for education at Ohio State University (1999–2001), and he served as humanities and education reference librarian at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (1998–99).
His activities in ACRL include serving on the Institute for Information Literacy Executive Committee (2006–present), as a member of the Blog Advisory Board (2005–06), and as chair of the Instruction Section 2006 Conference Program Planning Committee (2004–06). Walter also served on the First-Year Experience Task Force (2003–04), and as chair of the Education and Behavioral Sciences Section (2003–04).
Walter was a keynote speaker at the LOEX National Library Instruction Conference (2006) and was an invited speaker at the ACRL Washington Chapter preconference during the Washington Library Association Conference (2005). He was also a sponsored program speaker for the diversity committee of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (2005).
He is involved with the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2004–present), the California Teachers Association (2003–present), the Association for Library and Information Science Education (2003–present), and the History of Education Society (1993–present). Walter was also involved with the American Educational Research Association (2001–06), for which he served as chair of the Communication of Research Special Interest Group (2002–03).
His publications include “Instructional Improvement: Building Capacity for the Professional Development of Librarians as Teachers,” Reference & User Services Quarterly, 2006; “Moving Beyond Collections: Academic Library Outreach to Multicultural Student Centers,” Reference Services Review, 2005; and “Engelond: A Model for Faculty-Librarian Collaboration in the Information Age,” Information Technology and Libraries, 2000.
Walter received his bachelor of science degrees in Russian and linguistics from Georgetown University, where he also received his master’s degree in Russian area studies. He received a master of arts degree in education from American University, and then earned his master’s of library science and his master of science degree in history and philosophy of education from Indiana University. Walter earned his Ph.D. in higher education administration from Washington State University.

Academic librarians’ position descriptions under scrutiny: Hearing set for ALA Midwinter Meeting
A new task force was approved at the ACRL Fall Executive Committee meeting to review and update the academic library position descriptions published by CUPA-HR (College and University Professional Association for Human Resources) in its 2005–06 Administrative Compensation Survey Position Descriptions.
The charge of the CUPA-HR Position Descriptions of Academic Librarians Task Force is:
• to review and revise, as necessary, current CUPA-HR academic librarian position descriptions,
• to research national academic librarian position descriptions and identify those most current and relevant to today’s librarians,
• to maintain an open and interactive working relationship with CUPA-HR and ACRL staff throughout the process,
• to ensure that the leadership and membership of ACRL have an opportunity to comment on the revised descriptions and guide the process,
• to create a mechanism that supports regular review of CUPA-HR’s published librarian position descriptions, and
• to create a marketing plan to let librarians know about the CUPA-HR’s librarian position descriptions.
Hearing at Midwinter
ACRL’S CUPA-HR Position Descriptions of Academic Librarians Task Force has begun its work by collecting and charting position descriptions for the major categories of work within academic libraries. A draft of that work will be presented at a hearing being held at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. All interested parties are encouraged to attend and comment on the draft. Feedback will be taken on an ongoing basis throughout the project, and draft two of the report will be presented in April at the ACRL National Conference in Baltimore. The working document will be available on the ACRL Web site in early March.

Why a task force?
In 2004, the University of Maine System used CUPA-HR position descriptions as one of the resources for a regression analysis used to place academic librarians among other professionals in the Maine System. After the position review and placement of the librarians, it became apparent that the CUPA-HR descriptions were significantly out of date. CUPA-HR senior leadership responded to the University of Maine System Library Council by welcoming them to submit updated position descriptions for their fall 2006 publication. A single institution response to this national issue was certainly out of the question, so the Maine Council approached ACRL, and with the support and advice of ACRL leadership, presented the proposal for the task force.
