PRESERVATION NEWSC&RL News, November 207Vol. 68, No. 10 by Jane Hedberg NARA annual conference The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will hold its 2008 preservation conference March 10 at the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. The program, titled “The ABC’s of Modern Fire Suppression in Cultural Institutions,” will cover the past, present, and future of suppression systems. Through lectures and case studies, participants will learn about systems for new buildings, retrofitting systems into older buildings, and selecting systems appropriate for the objects they are to protect. They will also learn how to protect specialized use spaces, such as vaults, high bay storage, and data repositories; how shrinking budgets can be stretched to safeguard ever larger collections; and how suppression systems affect the environment and global warming. Digital assets The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), in conjunction with PALINET, SOLINET, Amigos Library Services, and OCLC Western Service Center, will offer the two-day workshop “Stewardship of Digital Assets: Sustaining Digital Collections” four times during the next year. The first workshop will be November 14–15, 2007; in Philadelphia, the second February 6–7, 2008, in Morrow, Georgia; the third May 14–15, 2008, in Dallas; and the fourth September 18-19, 2008, in Tacoma, Washington. This workshop will cover both assessing digital preservation needs and developing plans and policies to sustain digital collections. The faculty includes Liz Bishoff from the University of Colorado-Boulder, Tom Clareson from PALINET, Robin Dale from the University of California-Santa Cruz, and Katherine Skinner from Emory University. Each workshop will be limited to thirty-five participants. Registration is $275 for members of the sponsoring organizations and $325 for nonmembers. Video preservation Tim Vitale and Paul Messier, with assistance from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, the Bay Area Video Coalition and Walter Henry of Stanford University, have created the VideoPreservation Website. The purpose of the site is to encourage use of digital capture and mass storage media, such as hard drives or data tape, for the migration of analog video. It contains detailed illustrated information about the digital capture process, including setup of hardware and software, connections, signal, formats, storage, capture quality, and suppliers. It also contains information about traditional methods for analog to analog migration, videotape identification tools, video equipment museums, and useful publications. Map security The ALA Map and Geography Round Table (MAGERT) Task Force on Library Security for Cartographic Resources has distributed a draft of Map Collection Security Guidelines. It covers the reasons for improving security, the nature of map collections, facilities, staff members, readers, policies and procedures, and administering a security plan.
