Beleaguered Wisconsin Librarian to RetireFollowing months' worth of newspaper stories documenting management disputes between the head of the Frank L. Weyenberg Library of Mequon-Thiensville, Wisconsin, and library trustees, Director Alice Sedgwick has announced her retirement, effective December 31, from the post she has held for two decades. While declining to comment in her July 28 statement on the nature of her relationship with the board, Sedgwick did concede that recent events affected the timing of her decision. "I looked back and said, 'I'm ready to go. I'm ready to let go," she told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel August 11. Among the publicly aired points of contention have been trustees' concern that the 94,000-item collection lacks what past board President Sam Greeley calls the "the right mix of books," since so many titles have "low turnover." "It's not an easy job," board President James Paschen said of Sedgwick's post. "We will be looking for someone who is up to that challenge." Posted August 17, 1998. |
