Library Reopens After Subsidence Scare

After being closed on March 27 because of safety concerns about potential subsidence, the Penn Hills (Pa.) Library finally reopened April 20.

Library Director Ed Mandel told American Libraries that the municipal council is hiring a second engineering firm to “set up a scope of services” to fix gaps in an abandoned coal mine 30 feet under the building. Officials approved looking at a grouting program and determining whether any drilling will be needed.

The problem was discovered when engineers conducted tests for a building expansion that would triple the size of the suburban Pittsburgh facility to 33,000 square feet. Their report warned that the gaps could cause a sudden shift in the structure.
