Mississippi Legislature Passes
$20-Million Bond Bill

The Mississippi legislature March 29 approved a $20-million bond bill that will pay for a new facility for the Mississippi Library Commission and provide funds for a number of public libraries in the state.

Half of the funds are earmarked for a new commission building, allowing the agency to leave its current location behind an auto parts store in a shopping mall in West Jackson and allowing it to consolidate its services with the commission's library for the blind and physically handicapped, currently located about 12 miles away in North Jackson. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in about three years.

The remainder is to go to some of the state's public libraries to pay for capital improvements, renovation and/or repair of existing facilities, furniture, equipment, and technology.
