Gates Foundation Steps into
International Arena with Teaser Award

The Gates Learning Foundation offered what it called a “sneak preview” August 25 of a new award of up to $1 million to be given next summer for imagination and ingenuity in providing free public access to the Internet. The application process and award criteria will be developed over the next several months by a panel of “distinguished members of the international library community,” whose names have not been revealed.

The award is the foundation’s first step beyond the United States and Canada, where its library initiatives are currently concentrated, said Carol Erickson, GLF international library programs manager. She indicated that libraries and other institutions—and even countries—could be award recipients.

Erickson made the announcement in Bangkok, Thailand, during the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions conference. She told American Libraries that the foundation’s investment outside the United States will rise as the American projects near completion in 2003.
