Youth Tries to Hack into NASA
with Library Computer
A freshman at James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, was arrested February 1 for attempting to break into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration system using a school library computer. He had already been under investigation for hacking into Clemson University's computer system in October and causing thousands of dollars of damage.
Police had seized the unnamed youth's home computer equipment on January 20, so he logged on to the Internet at the school library six days later.
Internet access in Fairfax County schools is basically unfettered, district spokesman Paul Regnier told the February 12 Washington Post. “Kids can come into the library and get on the Internet. It's pretty open.”
