U.S.-China Collaboration Yields Historic Collection on MicrofilmA unique collaboration between institutions in the United States and China has yielded a new source for scholars of Chinese history. Nearly 4,000 Chinese-language books in the social sciences and humanities published between 1932 and 1945, most of which do not exist in U.S. collections, are now available on microfilm through the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. The films are the result of a three-year project initiated by the Committee on Scholarly Communication with China, later assumed by the Council on Library and Information Resources in Washington. The Chinese partner institution was Fudan University Library in Shanghai, one of the richest collections in the country. The Council on Library and Information Resources announced the collection's availability December 18, saying most of the titles had been “at high risk of decay because of the poor quality of paper used for printing during the war period.” Posted January 4, 1999. |
