New Jersey Library Placed
under Board of Education
Union City, New Jersey, has placed its public library under the auspices of the board of education beginning July 1 and laid off half the staff of nine, including Director Sharon Iacone.
Iacone told American Libraries that Mayor Raul Garcia, who was elected in June 1998, believed that the library was financially mismanaged because of an unfavorable audit report. The mayor was unavailable for comment.
Although city officials told her to buy more books and computers for the main library and one branch, Iacone said they cut the library budget from $750,000 in 1994 to $600,000 in 1999. She was forced to cut the full-time staff from 15 in 1994 to the current nine. In March all four library board members, except the president, were asked to resign and a new board was appointed by the mayor.
