Mom Fights Forever ReinstatementThe mother of an Elgin (Ill.) School District U46 student has appealed the reversal of the 1997 removal of Judy Blume’s Forever from middle-school library shelves, and called for a reexamination of the district’s book-selection policies. Characterizing the May 27 action as “stacked from the beginning” because officials only gave two days’ public notice of the meeting, Judy Osborne told the May 28 Elgin Courier News that the controversy “is just a symptom of a bigger problem,” namely librarians’ role as the sole gatekeepers of selection decisions. The 1997 decision to ban Forever, Blume’s 1975 tale of a sexually active teen romance, was revisited as the result of a March reconsideration request by Eastview Middle School librarian Joan Devine. Because ESD officials are sorting out who is authorized to review Judy Osborne’s appeal, the board is forming another review committee of educators and concerned citizens to consider the book’s merits, the June 2 Courier News reported.
