U.S. News and World Report
Ranks Library Schools

U.S. News and World Report released rankings March 19 of 48 library science master's degree programs in the United States that are accredited by the American Library Association, with the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign and the University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill leading the top-20 list, followed by Syracuse University, the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Schools were also ranked by specialties, with Rutgers the leader in school library media training and services for children and youth, the University of Texas/Austin for archives and preservation, Drexel University for information systems, the University of Pittsburgh for health librarianship, and Indiana University for music librarianship.

The rankings are based on a fall 1998 survey of deans, program directors, and faculty of accredited graduate programs. Questionnaires asked individuals to rate the quality of the programs at each institution as strong, good, adequate, or marginal. The complete rankings and methodology are available on the magazine's Web site.
