Renovated Cleveland Public Library Reopens

After being closed for two years for a $24-million restoration, the Cleveland Public Library’s main building on Superior Avenue reopened to the public May 22. The renovation was part of a $90-million project that also created a 10-story Louis Stokes Wing and redesigned the Eastman Reading Garden. “She’s beautiful,” Director Marilyn Gell Mason said of the 74-year-old building. “The blush has returned to her cheeks. She’s eager and ready to face the 21st century.”

The architectural firm of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates conducted the restoration, which upgraded the building’s structure and its electronic, heating, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, and security systems. Firm partner Malcolm Holzman said the library restoration “honors its cultural and historic importance while providing a landmark for the enjoyment of future generations.”

The May 23 Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that some of the restored features included a rose-colored marble staircase and dark-wood reading tables.
