Stark County Strikers Reach
Tentative Settlement with Board

Following more than 24 hours of talks, negotiators for trustees of the Stark County District Library in Canton, Ohio, and striking staff members arrived at a tentative contract agreement August 24. The intense negotiations were called by the State Employment Relations Board, which had intervened the previous week.

Anne Hill, executive director of Local 925 of the Service Employees International, told the August 25 Canton Repository that there were still “some minor issues to work out” before a scheduled August 26 vote on the contract by union members. The library board called a special meeting for August 27. Specifics of the proposal were unavailable.

Some 200 union members from across Ohio who were in Canton for a statewide Teamsters conference rallied August 23 in support of the strikers. That same day the Repository reported that the library’s Madge Youtz branch was to reopen at noon, marking the first time that all 10 of the system’s branches would be operating since the strike began July 31.
