Harry Potter Returns to Zeeland

The Zeeland (Mich.) Public Schools have removed most of the restrictions imposed in November 1999 on using J. K. Rowling’s bestselling series of Harry Potter books. Superintendent Gary Feenstra announced May 11 that he had accepted the advice of a 14-member committee he appointed in March. The committee recommended restoring the books to the library shelves of the elementary and middle schools and permitting students to borrow them without restrictions.

According to the May 12 Holland Sentinel, teachers will still not be permitted to read the books aloud in kindergarten through 5th-grade classrooms, and any future Harry Potter titles considered for purchase will go through the district’s normal selection procedure.

“The Zeeland community deserves commendation for the process that it went through,” said Chris Finan of the American Booksellers Foundation for Freedom of Expression, one of several groups—including ALA—that opposed the original restrictions. “This demonstrates that it works, that free speech can change things.”
