Hawaii Gets $1.25 Million for New Books

State lawmakers have approved a supplemental budget that includes $1.25 million for the Hawaii State Public Library System to purchase books and other materials for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. Hawaii State Librarian Virginia Lowell said in the May 4 Honolulu Star-Bulletin that it was the first time since 1995 that the library system has had money in its operating budget to buy books.

Although the library system had requested $4 million from the legislature, Lowell said she will take whatever she can get. “Our legislative session was quite a success for us,” she said. “We did get some of what we asked for and it was in the right places.” The library system has faced drastic cuts in Governor Cayetano’s recent attempts to balance the state budget.

The money will be used to purchase updated reference materials, recent novels, replacements for worn children’s books, CDs, and videos.
