Three Publishers Invest in
Online-Content Provider Ebrary
Publishers Random House, Pearson, and McGraw-Hill announced October 10 that they will back ebrary, an online provider of books, periodicals, and databases that is scheduled to open for business in November. Ebrary says its service will allow customers to view and search books, maps, and other digitized documents free but will charge them for copies.
Customers will be able to print or copy parts of works on a per-page basis, download e-books, or order hard copies, making payments through an ebrary account or credit card.
Ebrary chief executive Christopher Warnock said the company hopes to provide publishers with new revenues and increase the exposure of copyright-protected titles in a way that encourages book sales. The service will provide links to online booksellers and will compensate libraries when people use ebrary services there, Cnet News reported October 11.
