High School Librarian Sentenced
for Sexual Relationship with Student
Gary Temple, a 46-year-old former media specialist at Northridge High School in Farmington, Utah, was sentenced August 14 to a year in jail, 36 months’ probation, and the completion of a sex-offender course for having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.
He was arrested in April after police found Temple and the girl naked in a van in a secluded church parking lot. He later pleaded guilty to felony illegal sexual conduct, the Deseret News reported August 29.
Prosecutors said the relationship began after both left Fairfield Junior High School, where the girl was Temple’s aide in the library. Temple was transferred to Northridge, and the girl began attending another high school.
The victim’s father said he had earlier spoken to the junior high’s principal to express concern over an e-mail and gifts Temple had given the girl, but that the presents were explained as thank-yous for being a good teacher’s aide. Temple was later fired from his job at Northridge.
