Michigan Trustees Hold Hearing on Filters

Grappling with how to comply with a new Michigan law taking effect October 1 that requires libraries to bar digitized “sexually explicit matter that is harmful to minors” from patrons under 18, the board of the Herrick District Library in Holland held a public forum September 12 about Internet filters. The meeting came some seven months after voters there decisively defeated a ballot measure that would have mandated the installation of blocking software on all machines.

According to the September 13 Grand Rapids Press, most of the 50 citizens who attended the meeting were pro-filter. Displaying both used and new furnace filters she had brought along, Zeeland school board President Tish Fackler noted that while the filthy filter didn’t remove all the dirt, it did “filter out plenty.”

Irv Bos, who as president of the American Family Association’s Holland chapter had spearheaded the failed ballot initiative, argued that trustees should bar sexually explicit images from all patrons. “I don’t believe our tax dollars should pay for a public place that would sponsor pornography,” he said.

Trustees announced they would meet September 28 to form a new Internet policy.
