Robert Martin Confirmed As IMLS Head

The Senate voted July 12 to confirm President Bush’s nomination of Robert S. Martin, professor and interim director of the Texas Woman’s University School of Library and Information Studies in Denton, to head the Institute of Museum and Library Services

Martin will replace Beverly Sheppard, who has been the senior official at IMLS since March 1999. She will now resume her responsibilities as IMLS deputy director for museum services.

IMLS, established by Congress and signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, administers federal library and museum programs formerly housed in the Department of Education. Under the legislation, the directorship alternates every four years between individuals with special competence in library service and museum service.
