Suspect Sought in Bangor PL TheftsPolice have named Raymond Nelson, a 19-year-old Bangor man, as their lead suspect sought in connection with the theft of over $27,000 worth of rare books, maps, and illustrations from the Bangor Public Library. The items, stolen between February and March, were quickly sold to local rare-book collectors and dealers. Some of the dealers Nelson is thought to have approached realized the goods were stolen and contacted police, though others had bought and resold some of the items. However, police have recovered over $14,000 worth of the missing books and maps. Librarian Barbara McDade told the May 11 Bangor Daily News, “I’m absolutely surprised. I figured these items would be all across the country by now.” Investigators were able to trace the thefts to Nelson by interviewing the dealers he approached, who revealed that he had presented them with picture identification. In the meantime, Nelson has disappeared from his Bangor apartment and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the thefts. Posted May 14, 2001. |
