First Lady Presents IMLS Awards

First Lady Laura Bush presented the 2005 National Awards for Museum and Library Service to three libraries and three museums in a ceremony at the White House January 30.

Given by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the $10,000 awards recognize institutions that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to public service through innovative programs and community partnerships. The library winners were the Johnson County (Kans.) Library, the Mathews (Va.) Memorial Library, and the Saint Paul (Minn.) Public Library.

“We are so proud of these libraries and museums,” Bush said. “They are centers of excellence that reach out to everyone in their communities. They are lifetime partners in discovery, imagination, and learning that we can call on again and again throughout our lives.”

“These libraries and museums are cornerstones of our democracy,” said IMLS Acting Director Mary Chute. “They help to create and sustain a nation of learners.”

Museum winners were the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte, North Carolina; the Pratt Museum in Homer, Alaska; and COSI Toledo in Ohio.
