Green Bozeman Library Reserves Parking for HybridsScheduled to open November 12, the new Bozeman (Mont.) Public Library has reserved its prime parking spots for hybrid vehicles and car pools. The policy is part of the library’s effort to obtain silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system—a requirement if the library wishes to secure a promised contribution of at least $500,000 from an anonymous donor. The standards, which were developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, also prompted the building to include such structural features as solar panels and no-flush urinals. The parking spots—sure to be prized during cold Montana winters—are near to the rear of the new building. Because hybrids were the only environmentally conscious vehicles mass-produced during the adoption of LEED standards, vehicles that run on biodiesel fuel are not currently permitted to use the parking spaces. However, the building committee’s environmental remediation expert, Kath Williams, said in the November 2 Bozeman Daily Chronicle that such green vehicles will likely be included in the new version of LEED standards.
