ALA’s Sheketoff Testifies before House on Library FundingEmily Sheketoff, director of the American Library Association’s Washington Office, testified March 26 in support of President Bush’s fiscal 2005 budget request for library programs. Appearing before the House Appropriations Committee, Sheketoff urged the legislators to fund the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) at its recently authorized level of $232 million. She noted that the full funding would help libraries meet their needs at a time when they are attempting to serve a growing number of customers while facing severe cutbacks in state and local funding. Sheketoff also asked the committee to boost FY2005 funding for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program, part of the No Child Left Behind Act, to $100 million; the increase would make funds available in all 50 states. “The Library Services and Technology Act and the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program provide critical funding for libraries of all kinds nationwide,” Sheketoff testified. “Including $232 million for LSTA and $100 million for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program in FY 2005 will ensure that library patrons of all ages have sufficient access to library and information services, support recruiting and educating the next generation of librarians, and provide libraries the resources they need to improve literacy skills and academic achievement,” she concluded.
