Treasurer Charged with Stealing $30,000 from Illinois Library

An Orland Hills, Illinois, village trustee has been charged with stealing some $30,000 from the town’s library. Gary Bozek, who also served as treasurer of the Orland Hills Public Library District, has admitted to writing at least 33 checks to himself totaling up to $13,000 from the library’s accounts since October, according to the March 18 Chicago Daily Southtown, and bank records show additional checks going back to early 2003.

Bank officials told the library board about the missing funds on the afternoon of March 15; Bozek was arrested when he showed up for the village board meeting that evening, the Southtown reported March 17. Bozek—who has previously served as Orland Hills village treasurer, vice president of the village’s police pension board, and chair of the village board’s finance commission—immediately confessed to the theft and resigned both village positions.

As library treasurer, Bozek was able to sign checks for less than $500 without the board’s approval. Officials said the $30,000 Bozek is accused of skimming amounts to over a quarter of the library’s $115,000 annual budget.

Bozek was released on his own recognizance March 17. Police Chief David Laveck told the Southtown Bozek had been having financial problems recently: He lost his job as a private financial consultant, his wife is unable to work because she has multiple sclerosis, his 16-year-old daughter suffers from a neurological disease, and liens have been placed on the home he has owned for 10 years.
