Massachusetts Library Receives Surprise $1.2-Million GiftA former Methuen, Massachusetts, firefighter described as a “loner” has left a $1.2-million bequest to Nevins Memorial Library—the single largest donation in the library’s history.Frank Z. Ringalo, an East End resident who retired from the fire department in 1959 and moved to Florida, died in 2002 at the age of 87. Fellow firefighter Leonard Tuminowski said in the November 7 Boston Globe that he was not surprised that Ringalo left the money to the library because “he would rather be off in a corner reading a book than mixing with the guys.” Ringalo specified that the money be used, “if possible,” to build an East End branch or an addition to the main branch, or for library operations. The library board invested the funds and will use the interest, estimated at about $30,000 to $40,000 a year, for operating expenses. “This is like a dream for us,” Library Director Krista McLeod told the Globe. “It came entirely out of the blue. We don’t even know if he was ever a library patron because our records don’t go back that far.” At Ringalo’s request, the reference room in the library’s new wing will be dedicated December 7 in honor of his parents Peter and Louise, who emigrated from Lithuania in 1907.
