2008 LITA National Forum registration now open

The theme of the Forum is Technology and Community: Building the Techno Community Library. Between 1:00 pm on Friday October 17th through noon on Sunday October 19th you are going to want to be with us at the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati Ohio.  Programs include:  keynote presentations by Michael Porter from Webjunction and David Lankes from the Information Institute of Syracuse University; 30+ concurrent sessions, and poster sessions.  Networking opportunities include a Friday night reception, self selected Saturday night networking dinners, lengthy breaks, breakfasts, lunch, and an Open Gaming Night.

In addition to the above programming, two full day workshops are offered starting on Thursday afternoon and continuing through Friday morning.   In Marketing the Value of the Library’s IT Department, you will gain tools and strategies for strengthening the perceived value of the IT department’s role. Key components include business impact analysis, blueprinting the IT infrastructure, and marketing the IT department.  Innovations in Next Generation Library Management Systems addresses the user expectations for interfaces and three open source library applications for developing Library Management Systems to improve the landscape.

Annual Conference highlights

Advanced registration for the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim closes on May 16th (http://www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/annual/2008a/registration.cfm).   If possible, you will want to register now to realize this savings.  While you’re at it, you will want to consider registering for one of LITA’s three preconferences.  LITA is offering these workshops on Friday, June 27, 2008 in Anaheim:

Library-wide IT Proficiency

Datagrid Technologies and Libraries

Getting Started with Drupal (space is limited and only two openings remain)

For more details, please see http://www.lita.org/ala/lita/litaevents/litaannual2008/litaannual.cfm .

Register for Annual Conference and join us at the LITA Open House on Friday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the Anaheim Convention Center in room 213 D.  LITA Open House is a great opportunity for current and prospective members to talk with Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) leaders and learn how to make connections and become more involved in LITA activities.

Immediately following the Open House plan to attend the LITA Happy Hour.  Please join the LITA Membership Development Committee and members from around the country for networking, good cheer, and great fun! Expect lively conversation and excellent drinks (cash bar). The Anaheim Happy Hour is from 5:30 to 8:00 at the Mist Pool Bar at Hotel Menage.

Spend Sunday Afternoon with LITA on June 28th.  The afternoon begins at 1:30 with Top Technology Trends, continues at 3:00 with the LITA Awards and Scholarships ceremony/reception, and leads into the afternoon finale at 4:00 -- Mark Beatty’s President’s Program:  “Isn’t it great to be in the library. . . wherever that is?” with Joe Janes, associate professor in the Information School of the University of Washington in Seattle and columnist for American Libraries, the keynote speaker along with members of the “It’s All Good” <http://scanblog.blogspot.com/> blogging group as the reactor panel for a lively exploration of possible futures.

For more details about these programs and many additional LITA programs being offered this year,  please see the Web site at

BIGWIG launches new site

On May 1st, the LITA Blogs, Interactive Groupware and Wikis Interest Group (BIGWIG) launched YourBIGWIG (http://www.yourbigwig.com).  This new site is designed to allow for better communication between members, as well as a new virtual workspace. Jason Griffey, BIGWIG chair, said “We are hoping this site becomes the hub of discussions and planning for BIGWIG activities, as well as a sort of playground for virtual participation.  BIGWIG has created this website in order to facilitate communication between BIGWIG members, potential members and interested parties. We hope to use this site to enable BIGWIG to be more efficient and effective in the work we do, allow for virtual participation, and solicit feedback and commentary on our activities.”

Since 2005, BIGWIG has been the "Social Software" IG of LITA. BIGWIG is responsible for maintaining the LITABlog, and LITA Wiki. Additionally, BIGWIG has taken on several projects including conference blogging and podcasting, and podcasts of interviews with candidates for LITA offices.

BIGWIG also puts on the Social Software Showcase, an online unconference occurring around and during the time of ALA Annual. The Showcase is made up of a wiki where each year presenters post their presentations on cutting edge technology and social software. Discussion follows on the wiki with postings from people regardless of where they are in the world. BIGWIG also hosts a face to face roundtable discussion with some of our presenters at ALA Annual Conference.

How can you become a BIGWIG member and get involved?  Simply sign up on YourBIGWIG.  In addition, you can subscribe to BIGWIG’s discussion list; send an email to sympa@ala.org with the subject line “subscribe to lita-bigwig”.  Finally, if you are attending Annual Conference, you can simply attend the BIGWIG meeting on Monday, June 30, from 8 to 10 am at the Hilton Anaheim in the Carmel room.

LITA Interest Groups are self forming.  You can join any IG by simply attending their meetings at Annual Conferences or Midwinter Meetings or by contacting the current chair and indicating your interest in participating.  For a complete list of LITA IGs, please see the left hand navigation at   http://www.lita.org/ala/lita/litamembership/litaigs/litainterest.cfm .
