Discovering Digitization: Defining Your Path to Digital Access

Friday, July 10, 2009
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Chicago, Illinois

Members of Ball State University Libraries Metadata and Digital Initiatives department will offer this full-day preconference which will provide an opportunity for librarians to learn how to plan and implement digital projects.  As more and more information moves to electronic media rather than traditional print, librarians should be open to learn the processes that allow them to be active participants in this transformation.  This preconference will focus on basic and intermediate digitization practices and standards, and will be truly interactive. Topics include project planning, digitization and image processing, and cataloging and metadata.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the components of successful digitization project planning by discussing specific examples.
  • Learn the digitization process through lecture and demonstration.
  • Grasp basic metadata standards and show understanding by cataloging sample digital artifacts.

Speakers: James Bradley, Head of Metadata & Digital Initiatives, Ball State University; Jonathan Brinley, Metadata & Digital Initiatives Developer, Ball State University; Amanda Hurford, Digital Initiatives Multimedia Developer, Ball State University

Registration fees: ACRL member - $235; ALA member - $285; Nonmember - $315; Student - $95.  Registration materials are now available.  May 22, 2009 is the advance registration deadline.
