Workshop Goal:
To help participants identify techniques and tools that will enable academic librarians, faculty members, information technologists, instructional design professionals, et al. to discover or develop and implement new approaches for collaboration, to achieve maximum integration of the library into the teaching and learning process throughout their institutions. To help guide such collaborative efforts toward library, curricular, and other related institutional goals - especially those of advancing information literacy.

Workshop Description:
Convenient. Simple. Unexpected. Impressive. The Age of User Experience has forever altered the expectations of American consumers, especially the millennial generation that constitutes a majority of the academic library’s user base. To successfully reach and engage the user community academic librarians must master the art of adaptability. Good customer service is and will remain important, but may be insufficient to meet rapidly shifting user expectations. Many organizations are learning they must go beyond traditional customer service into the new realm of user experience design. Doing so requires new skills and a willingness to evolve professionally. In this online workshop attendees will learn how design thinking, rooted in the methods designers use to find problems and identify appropriate solutions, may be used to create user experiences that deliver meaning to individuals. Steven Bell, co-author of Academic Librarianship by Design and lead blogger at Designing Better Libraries, will introduce design thinking as a strategy to transform routine encounters into memorable experiences that exceed user expectations. 

About the Presenter
Steven J. Bell is Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services at Temple University. Prior to that he was Director of the Paul J. Gutman Library at Philadelphia University  and Assistant Director at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned his Ed.D. in 1997.  He writes and speaks frequently on topics such as information retrieval, library and learning technologies, and academic librarianship. An Adjunct Professor at the Drexel University College of Information Science and Technology, he teaches courses in academic librarianship and information retrieval. He maintains a Web site and Weblog, “Steven Bell’s Keeping Up Web Site” and “The Kept-Up Academic Librarian”, that promote current awareness skills and resources. Steven is a co-founder of the Blended Librarian’s Online Learning Community on the Learning Times Network and has participated in numerous virtual presentations. He blogs for ACRLog, ACRL’s official Weblog and the Designing Better Libraries, a blog about design thinking, creativity and innovation for better library user experiences.
