CURRENT ACTIVITIES

1.During the meeting, the current chair and co-chair solicited names of possible nominees for the upcoming election of a chair for the 2005/2006 term.

2. The main topic of the meeting was two presentations on the MARC 21 Classification format, following by a question and answer and discussion period.

Dianne Hillman, Director of Library Services and Operations at NSDL (National Science Digital Library), gave a brief tutorial of the MARC 21 Classification format that covered its overall structure, tags, and relationship to the other MARC 21 formats. She also reviewed the ongoing development of "crosswalks" between the MARC 21 Classification format and the fast-evolving XML format.

Adam Chandler and Jim LeBlanc, both of the Cornell University Library, gave a presentation of the Hierchical Interface to LC Classification (HILCC), which is a specific application of the MARC 21 Classification and Holdings formats used to develop an intelligent subject browsing display in an undergraduate library.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

1. The group briefly discussed possible topics of interest that might be discussed at future MFIG meetings: (a) A MARC Holdings topic for the annual 2005 conference in Chicago, as OCLC will be implementing the MARC for format for holdings shortly after this conference. Possible sub-topics include Additional discussion of the MARC Holdings format in relation to the OCLC implementation after the fact, and what is RLIN doing with MARC Holdings? (b) Changes need in the MARC formats, Bib and Authorities, to accommodate FRBR. (c) AACR 3 and MARC and (d) The Community Information MARC format, who is using it and how.
