The Guilderland Public Library has recognized the importance of a library offering services to the teen population of its community.
In fall 2002 our New York State Senator, Senator Breslin, in support of the Library's goal of better serving its teen patrons, allocated five thousand dollars to the Library for the improvement of the Young Adult area. The Young Adult area is being refurnished to create a physical space where teens can find, explore and use information in a welcoming atmosphere. The Demco Creative Merchandising Grant was awarded to the Guilderland Public Library. The Guilderland Public Library will use the grant to broaden service to the teen population of Guilderland, enhance the newly remodeled Teen Lounge area of the library, and set up outreach information and material displays in places such as the Guilderland Central School libraries and the local shopping mall and cinemas.
In May 2003 the Guilderland Public Library added a Young Adult Librarian, charged with serving the needs of the teen population, to the professional staff of the library. In September 2003, The Guilderland Public Library will begin a book discussion project entitled: Reading Connections @The Guilderland Public Library: Linking Parents and Teens. This is a two year NYS Parent and Child Library Grant. The goal is to keep teens communicating within their family.
